Support from the inside out.
When most women hear “pelvic floor,” they think of bladder leaks after pregnancy or certain exercises. But there’s so much more to the story — and far too many women are living with symptoms they think are normal, when they’re actually signs of pelvic floor dysfunction.
Maria, our physical therapist and pelvic floor specialist at Team Health Care Clinic wants to help more women understand what’s really going on “down there” — because knowledge is power, and healing starts with awareness.
Let’s break it down:
What Is the Pelvic Floor?
Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that acts like a hammock, supporting your bladder, uterus, and rectum. It plays a crucial role in core stability, sexual function, bowel and bladder control, and even posture.
When these muscles aren’t working properly — whether they’re too tight (hypertonic) or too weak (hypotonic) — your entire system can feel out of balance.
Hypertonic Pelvic Floor (Too Tight)
Surprised? Most people assume a weak pelvic floor is the only problem. But for many women, the real issue is tightness — muscles that are holding tension and not relaxing when they should.
Common symptoms of a hypertonic pelvic floor:
Pelvic pain or pressure
Pain during intimacy
Trouble emptying your bladder
Feeling like you “can’t relax” your core
Constipation or straining
Urgency — needing to go, all the time
These muscles are often overworking, compensating for instability somewhere else. And just like any overworked muscle, they get fatigued, inflamed, and angry.
Hypotonic Pelvic Floor (Too Weak)
On the flip side, a weakened pelvic floor can’t provide the support your body needs.
Common symptoms of a hypotonic pelvic floor:
Leaking when you laugh, cough, sneeze, or jump
Feeling like something is “falling out” (prolapse)
Low back or hip instability
Poor core strength
Difficulty holding in gas or stool
